If you’re a parent of a child in PreK through 5th grade, you’re probably wondering when does the first marking period end. The DOE continues to use electronic report cards for these grades. The first marking period is typically the beginning of the school year, and students should receive their report cards a week or so after the end of the first marking period. If you don’t receive your child’s grades, it’s time to contact the school to make sure the grades you’re expecting were received.

PreK through 5th grades will continue to use the DOE’s electronic report cards

Parents and students will have access to a child’s report card electronically after the first marking period ends. The DOE has translated the standard report card into nine different languages and provides a Google Form for parents and students to sign. After reviewing their child’s grades, parents will sign off and receive their child’s report card. A summary of the child’s progress toward mastery will also be provided.

Students in PreK through 5th grade will be able to view their grades on the DOE’s website for the remainder of the school year. Secondary students in the 4X4 program will not receive progress reports until 2020-21. After the first marking period ends, teachers will continue to update grades in Parents/Vue. Teachers are also encouraged to continue using informal reporting methods, such as updating grades on an online gradebook.

After the first marking period ends, students in PreK through 5th grades will be able to access their grades on the new system. Beginning with the fourth marking period, grades will continue to be available electronically on the DOE’s website. Parents and students will have access to their grade-level grades as soon as they receive them. There will be several new features in the new version, which will make it more user friendly.

Parents have the right to know more about the grading policies their child is receiving. This is especially important when it comes to the current COVID-19 pandemic. Because of this, the DOE has made some changes to the grading scales for the entire school year starting April 2020. Parents should contact their child’s school with any questions they may have regarding the report card.

Teachers will notify parents of any grade changes through email or letters if a student is at risk of being retained. This notification may come as early as the end of the second marking period or as late as the third. Regardless, teachers will not make changes to a student’s grade without a grade change form and follow specific HCPSS procedures.

The first marking period ended on April 30, 2018. Teachers and parents should keep in mind that these new tools are not yet ready for use in every school. In fact, some school districts have already begun using them in their classrooms. For example, Prince William County and Loudoun County have already implemented it. In this new reporting system, students will have one grade per subject area, which is broken into broad categories based on the standards students are learning.
