Joel’s battle with cancer left him with several treatments and two years of depression, but he soon began to heal and resume his ministry.
Her gynecologist prescribed an antibiotic and ordered a mammogram and ultrasound, but both tests came back negative. Despite the lack of information, Hemphill refused to heed the gynecologist’s advice, insisting on seeing a surgeon. The gynecologist prescribed chemotherapy and radiation, which caused uncomfortable burns. Hemphill’s children were horrified.
After leaving the Atlanta Journal, Hemphill’s search for the heart of the South continued. He wrote longer magazine pieces and books. He received a Nieman Fellowship from Harvard University and wrote The Nashville Sound: Bright Lights and Country Music, which chronicled the rise of country and western music. The book won the Georgia Writers Association’s award for best nonfiction book in 1970. While battling cancer, Hemphill continued to write.
